Assistant Controller

About the role

SmartBear is looking for an Assistant Controller to join our Controllership team and play a critical role in scaling our financial function. The Assistant Controller will be instrumental in leading the day-to-day accounting while also influencing the strategy and direction of the team. This includes developing and implementing policies, procedures, and driving continuous improvement. This is a perfect role for a financial leader who will thrive in a dynamic and fast-growing environment. The Assistant Controller will report to the SVP, Corporate Controller and oversee the Corporate Accounting team.


As the Assistant Controller you will:

  • Manage and develop a high performing team of accounting professionals, promoting a culture of continuous improvement
  • Manage the global monthly closing cycle, including oversight of reconciliations and financial reporting and partnership with FP&A on managerial reporting
  • Manage the accounting and financial operations for a complex multi-entity, multi-currency global company including areas of consolidation, revenue, general ledger, treasury, payroll, payables, capitalized software, intercompany, debt and equity while ensuring compliance with US GAAP, local accounting requirements and internal policies
  • Lead financial related audits and partner with the Tax Director to support tax related audits
  • Build meaningful and trusted relationships with key internal stakeholders across business units and functions  
  • Continuously review and enhance financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and systems to align with best practices and evolving business needs
  • Support new business initiatives and other major change management impacting financial statements and related systems
  • Manage the preparation of revenue and cash forecasts in collaboration with FP&A to support the planning and execution of financial strategies and company objectives
  • Lead the accounting research process and interpretation of US GAAP guidance for key accounting and reporting areas; partner with business leaders on impacts of conclusions and how they may drive business decisions
  • Other duties as assigned

We are looking for you if you have:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in related field of Accounting and/or Finance
  • 10+ years of progressive financial management experience
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
  • Mix of public accounting and industry experience preferred
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, ideally in a SaaS environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly detailed oriented and organized in work, willingness to roll-up the sleeves
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively with different levels of employees across an organization
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities 
  • Proven experience leading and motivating teams

SmartBear is seeking a full-stack marketer to join our team and own the growth marketing strategy for one of our product groups in the SmartBear family of tools. Primary Responsibilities
  • Define, build, and execute demand generation strategies and campaigns focused on driving highly-qualified leads to sales

Position Summary:  

Use deep market knowledge, engaging technical content, persuasive presentation, and storytelling skills to show the endless possibilities of creating unique value with both open source and commercial offerings at SmartBear.  

You will play a crucial role in developing and supporting the strategy and message to empower and energize our current communities and users in addressing deployment challenges through technology. In the dynamic landscape of the digital world, characterized by the widespread adoption of mobile apps, web apps, APIs, cloud-native technology, and the increasing importance of observability, your focus will be on ensuring a developer-first insight-driven approach to application development and operation. 

In this role, you will work closely with the observability teams, emphasizing the importance of standards like OpenTelemetry. Your goal is to enable our customers and internal teams to tackle application development and deployment challenges with a quality and security-focused process.  

By embracing a developer-centric observability mindset, you will contribute to streamlining the entire development lifecycle, from the initial stages through deployment and beyond, ensuring a seamless and efficient insight-driven experience for all stakeholders. 

Being a key member of SmartBear’s Developer Relations team, you will create relationships with community leaders, influencers and (technical) partners.  

This is a highly technical role with the mission of engaging and inspiring the broad community of developers. Public speaking will be a part of your job and you will become one of the public faces of the company.  

 

What you’ll do:  

  • Show thought leadership and expertise by producing videos and authoring tech blogs, white papers, best practices guidelines, educational content, and other assets for both internal stakeholders as well as customers and partners. 
  • Deliver persuasive technical presentations during events around the world and through online channels. 
  • Create sample applications, prototypes, and integrations.
  • Build trust through active engagement with the developer community, learning about their successes and challenges, and advocating for their needs.
  • Continuously keep up to date with latest open source and commercial observability and OTel trends.
  • Monitor the technical community for trends, best practices, and enablement needs.
  • Define, and create technical enablement material for internal technical audiences.
  • Drive technical engagement and early adoption with community, committers, customers and partners leading to open source project commits, product enhancements, and customer wins.
  • Support Product Marketing with a compelling message and go-to-market strategy/execution, while helping to define and implement strategies for measuring community growth initiatives across the OTel space and related communities.
  • Collaborate with Engineering/Product teams in driving critical initiatives.
  • Bring kindness and empathy for the community to help them tackle their issues.
  • Assist, if called upon, for product marketing assets, product demos, industry analyst meetings, and high-level consulting. 

 

DevRel can expect to:  

  • Support the go-to-market strategy, messaging, and knowledge sharing towards internal and external audiences to ensure that the message permeates SmartBear as well as the marketplace. 
  • Advocate for community and customer needs with other teams inside of SmartBear. 
  • Support enablement of internal pre-sales, solution architects, and support services staff. 

Candidate with proven technical experience in:  

  • Logs, Metrics, Traces, OpenTelemetry, Distributed Tracing, Monitoring, Container Orchestration, and Cloud Platforms. 
  • Market trends and optionally be an open-source project maintainer or contributor. 
  • OTEL APIs and/or SDKs. 
  • Proficient in at least one programming language. 

Candidates demonstrate non-technical experience:  

  • 3+ years in a senior (or leader) developer relations role. 
  • Superior communication and storytelling skills both written and spoken with an ability to articulate key messages clearly and explain technical concepts to a wide variety of target audiences, including non-technical and deeply technical audiences.

UX Researcher  

We are seeking a User Experience Researcher to join our growing design team focused on delivering high-impact solutions to our customers. A successful researcher here leverages strong internal relationships to drive conversation and collaboration, educates our partners in research best practices, and empowers the organization to make better decisions through knowledge sharing. The ideal researcher for this role has experience with enterprise solutions, the software development lifecycle, and user experience best practices.  
 
You will be expected to: 

  • Define and lead UX research projects across various phases of product development. 
  • Collaborate with product design and research colleagues.
  • Work closely with cross-disciplinary teams to build impactful solutions for SmartBear customers. 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Define research plans that outline objectives, methodologies, and timelines. 
  • Communicate and negotiate with cross-functional partners, stakeholders, and leadership to align on business scope, high-level goals, and product analytics/metrics.  
  • Execute research using both qualitative and quantitative methods.  
  • Distill complex user behaviors and data-driven insights into concise and actionable reports.  
  • Present findings in a way that informs and guides design and engineering decisions. 

  Required Experience:  

  • BA/BS degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Psychology, Computer Science, Business, data analysis or related field or equivalent education and experience.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience conducting research on digital products; enterprise software experience is a plus.
  • Experience conducting user research using various methods, including interviews, surveys, contextual inquiry, concept testing, usability evaluation, product metrics, etc.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment; to be critiqued and to critique. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Familiarity with the software development lifecycle 
  • Technical knowledge of API, software testing, developer tooling, etc.  
  • Experience with analytics in user experience practice (e.g. Amplitude, Pendo, Mixpanel)
